I'm Dreaming of an Olde Fashioned Hendersonville Christmas

Stephanie Houser

Every year as the cool, brisk air begins to fill the atmosphere and snowflakes start painting the North Carolina mountaintops, the spirit of Christmas fills the cozy town of Hendersonville.

The Christmas season brings warmth and joy among people and the community of Hendersonville indeed celebrates this holiday in a traditional, yet unique fashion. Since 1999, Downtown Hendersonville, Inc., annually presents the Olde Fashioned Hendersonville Christmas. This festive event usually takes place the first weekend in December, kicking off the holiday season.

Families, as well as visitors, crowd the downtown shopping area, strolling along the historical streets while admiring the various spectacles. To make this a true old-fashioned event, shopkeepers and salespersons dress in Victorian costumes. Free carriage rides down Main Street are offered to all. Merchants’ reward open houses with refreshments, sidewalk carolers sing and chimney sweeps can be seen in the heart of Hendersonville.

To tie in the wintry season, ice-skating was recently added to the event, giving folks a chance to enjoy a weekend of slippin’ and slidin’. Last year, a 30’ X 40’ artificial ice rink was set up outside the historic courthouse, allowing the community to go ice-skating for free. Hendersonville families, and visitors of all ages, enjoyed the excitement of ice-skating, in a warmth and seasonal atmosphere.
