Four Distinct Bed & Breakfasts: #2 Ms. Elsie’s Caribbean Bed and Breakfast

From the road, one of Charlotte's little known and best kept secrets looks like any other home. Blending into the surrounding landscape, this bed and breakfast is virtually unnoticed by passers-by. But hidden in the shadows of high-rise buildings -- behind thick trees and purposely unmarked -- is a Caribbean treasure offering an island-like getaway to all who visit.

Ms. Elsie's Caribbean Bed and Breakfast, owned and run by Cheryl Watkins, was inspired by her love for her grandmother, Ms. Elsie. In a phone conversation with Ms. Elsie, Watkins spoke of her plans to start a bed and breakfast and to name it after her. Watkins said that once she heard this news "my grandmother said, 'People will come from all over to eat with you.' I asked 'Why did you say that?' and she said, 'Because
I'm telling you what I know.'" Three years later, her grandmother's words have proven prophetic.

Since its opening in September 2000, Ms. Elsie's has played host to everyone from Charlotte natives to Hollywood celebrities, all looking for a quiet retreat with the "warmth, soul, spirit and energy of the Caribbean."

Originally from Aruba, Watkins is descended from five generations of gourmet Caribbean Creole chefs. She offers her guests a unique tropical decor with island cuisine reminiscent of Saint Martin. From her grandmother's love for the kitchen and her mother's love for china and crystal, guests are served a breakfast par-none.

Ms. Elsie's is known for its three-course authentic Caribbean breakfasts. Watkins always includes a variety of fresh fruit, seafood and dessert. Trained in her grandmother's kitchen, where fresh seafood and sweets were in abundance, Watkins shares these traditions with her guests. Though visitors are often surprised by a breakfast menu of seafood, one weekend at Ms. Elsie's leaves some guests so impressed, they return home and prepare it for themselves.

Renovated over 45 days by craftsmen of varying backgrounds, Ms. Elsie's is truly a melting pot of cultures and colors. The living room, painted in bright yellow, was given the name "Generations," which has a special meaning to Watkins. A metal sculpture hangs on the wall to symbolize three generations of women: her great-great-grandmother, who owned guest houses in Saint Martin; the grandmother who inspired her and Watkins herself, whose vision it was to share their gifts and talents.

Breakfast is served in the Aloe Vera Sunroom where guests can relax and enjoy the view. Through the large picture windows lining the back wall, a tropical garden and newly designed pool create the balmy outdoor atmosphere of a Caribbean island.

The bold colors Watkins chose for her three bedrooms and complementing bathrooms each reflect the islands. The Mango Suite, with its queen size bed and intricately tiled bathroom, was aptly named after Watkins' favorite fruit. The Peach Suite, with its kiwi/lime bathroom, is located toward the back of the home and offers peace and privacy. The Bamboo King Suite, named for good luck, has a spacious bathroom with a whirlpool tub and plush his and her bathrobes.

Guests don't need a passport to travel to this "island" paradise; some don't even leave their hometown. "She never stops evolving this place," says one guest who lives in Charlotte. "You just want to keep coming back." Because of Watkins’ perceptive nature, she may wait until after meeting her guests before choosing an ambiance she feels will keep them returning.

It is the special love for her grandmother and a desire to carry on Ms. Elsie's spirit and heritage that keeps Watkins devoted to the tropical paradise. "Instead of losing her," Watkins said, "I decided to share her with everyone."

Ms. Elsie's is the only African-American bed and breakfast in Charlotte and has been featured on the cover of Pride Magazine, in the Charlotte Women's Journal and Charlotte Post. It will soon be profiled on the television show "Turner South." For more information call Ms. Elsie's at (704) 365-5189 or visit www.mselsies.com.
